Maya was lethargic, pale, and suffered from severe bloody noses for months. Finally, after an alarming blood test, she was sent to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where a few days later, April 6, 2011, her family was given the devastating diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia, an aggressive blood cancer. Maya fought cancer for 6 ½ years, relapsed twice, endured numerous rounds of extreme doses of chemo, and 3 bone marrow transplants. She succumbed to the effects of her treatments on October 3, 2017 after receiving her 3rd bone marrow transplant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She will forever be in our hearts, and her legacy will continue on to make this world a kinder, more loving place and to find a cure for pediatric cancers.
